After successfully testing out the foot on the treadmill earlier in the week with a meager 5 miles, I was going to follow that up with a couple more single digit runs. Then, my friend Evan and Dave told me that they were gonna do the 25K loop of Malibu Creek that I'd just raced in a week and a half ago. Aw...crap.
I knew it was gonna be a gorgeous spring day (albeit a bit warm out) and I have hard time turning down an invite to run the trails. They assured me they'd take it easy. So...what the hell. 15 or so miles with 3,000+ feet of climbing? Bring it on.
We met up around 8:30am outside the park, and ran the loop easy, taking it nice and slow on the climb as well as the descent down the other end. There was not a cloud in the sky and while it was nice out, the temps quickly climbed and near the end, we were out of fluids (I was carrying 2 handhelds).

So per Evan's idea (who's a crazy strong runner and won the 50K here a couple of weeks back), we took a plunge into the creek near the finish and man oh man, was it exactly what the doctor ordered (the heat was starting to kill me). After submerging ourselves and "icing" our legs for about 10 minutes or so, we got out and walked back to our cars where my ice cold coke and chocolate milk awaited me. And let me tell ya...it tasted SWEET!

"Icing" in the cold ass creek.
We then drove up to a nearby Subway, shot the shit some more before finally parting ways. Evan's got a 50-miler coming up as does Dave when he attempts his first go at it next weekend at Old Goat (crazy hilly).
In hindsight, I'm glad I did it since I'm not shooting to PR or anything in LA anyway. LA will be a training run more or less to get the time on my feet and a chance to run through my city. Plus, how can you turn down a morning on the beautiful trails of the Santa Monica Mountains with some friends?

Looking forward to LA now and perhaps sneak in one more trail run tomorrow with other friends (I know, I know...get off my back). It's gonna be a great weekend!

Dude, I'm soooooo jealous!!! Glad you had a great run. See you for a run tomorrow. hehehe.
Oh and we are totally hitting that trail soon so I hope you don't mind another creek-filled day. :)
Ice, ice baby and take it easy Saturday.
Thanks for running with us. I had a great time and days like this are the reason I run.
Have fun at L.A. and when I get back down to SoCal in May we will get some more fun adventures in.
Woo Hoo!!! Fun times on the trails are the best. ;)
Thanks for that shot of shirtless boys in the creek....RAWWRRRRR!
Good luck and have a blast at LAM! I wish I could be there!!!!
Wow...that sounds like a GREAT run. I don't think I could have turned that down either. Running with Evan during taper? You ARE crazy. That guy is FAST. Didn't he destroy the course record for the 50k?
Enjoy LA. It looks like it is going to be a gorgeous SoCal day. You might just want to ice your legs/body in the Pacific when you are done.
wow, sounds like fun. bummed i missed it. i was up at 5 to run with the coyotes - extra sleep and the water crossing would have been nice!
Wow, that sounds like such an amazing run. And hello intimidating people to run with! Ha ha.
I'll look out for you at Mile 18. Stop by for some cold drinks or fruits. I'll make sure to buy a Coke just for you.
Nice. I'm a big fan of creek crossings right now. A lot of fun and the cold water feels good on the legs. I'd tell you to go easy since the foot has just recently healed but I know you will still go out on another trail run. I'd probably do the same. Have a great time running this weekend.
Great post Billy. I had a lot of fun out there. It's hard to pick a favorite part of the run, but I'm going with the soak in the creek!
How fun!! What a gorgeous setting and a great couple of friends. Love it. Taper schmaper indeed! Just take it super easy the next couple days and fuel/hydrate well and you'll be good to go this weekend. :)
Sounds like a fun time. Does the Alaskan ever have his shirt on? You're crazy running with those two during your taper...so much for that one! If you hit a low point during your marathon, just remember this day and how much fun it was.
What a great run! And wow do I miss SoCal... Have fun at LA 26.2!
