What I Do When I'm Not Running

So I haven't run a step since the SF Marathon (of which I ran half of). Today is officially Day 11 of no running. It's frustrating and agonizing at times, but I'm doing my best to find other ways to stay in shape and let out some steam.

One of the obvious is cycling. In full disclosure, I've yet to embrace this sport fully but circumstances have made me appreciate it more not only as a viable form of exercise, but as a "killing 2 birds with 1 stone" method of using it as a mode of commuting as well. But like I said, cycling and I have a lukewarm relationship at best.

Secondly, I've slowly migrated among the other hamsters on the elliptical at my gym. I was never crazy about this form of stationary exercise and never voluntarily tried it when I was at full health. Mostly because well, it looked stupid. But now with the injury forcing my hand at other creative methods of staying in somewhat decent shape, enter the elliptical machine. Not nearly as bad as I thought. But obviously, it ain't running. Nowhere close.

The last two are less obvious. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I've recently taking up boxing. It's been a good way to release take out some of my frustrations out on a bag, all the while building up a certain level of fitness and conditioning that I believe will only aid my running when I return to it. I've also been riding my motorcycle more these days. It's when I feel the freest, most relaxed (unless I'm fighting through LA traffic) and the closest way of clearing my mind other than through running.

Oh, and I'm still consuming massive quantities of calcium for good measure. Supplements, cheese, yogurt, milk...you name it, chances are I've ingested it. Watch out cows.

Bummer, I'm sorry that you have a streak going with no running.

Sadly I can't really see you amongst the hamsters, you need to be freed! ha ha.

Nice motorcycle. That is scary!

Just remember poor sara had to be on the mend too. :(

Looks like we're both out of commission for a while...embrace your inner fish though it'll will have zero impact on your foot.

Nice Triumph. Hope you get back to running soon - keep the miles low for a while when you do.

I'm thinking about getting a motorcycle when I move back to SoCal. A lot easier to get around (and to/from LA). I might get an on/off road one so I can get to certain trailheads too :)

I'm telling you, no matter how cheesy the Six Million Dollar man was, Lee Majors was a lucky son of a bitch.

Hey Billy Willy -

You'll heal before you know it. Let me know if I can take you out on a ride sometime soon! It's really gorgeous on PCH lately!

Get well soon bro

You need to try cycling with the triguys on the PCH and the mountain climbs on Saturday morning. We leave from Ocean/San Vicente at 7:30AM, and many different levels of riders going various distances, 2-3 hours total. The scenery is unbelievable - I actually find it vastly more fun that running (!)

That is sweet you are keeping busy. Nothing wrong with finding other activities to help keep you sane.
