Now, I must preface this by saying that it's still way early and I may crash and burn soon enough. But I made a resolution to myself that I would become an early morning riser at the start of this new training cycle no matter what.
So far, so good. Here's a sampling:
Tuesday: 8.3 miles @ 8:33 pace (+ 10 x 100m strides)
6:01 am start. Heartrate/effort way high (did I really lose fitness that fast?). Hailed/rained towards the end of the run, experienced hot spots at the bottom of feet, most likely due to wet shoes and socks.
Wednesday: Gym - no running
6:00 am start. Chest + core workout. Never been to my gym that early before. Sure beats the 5-7pm crowd.
Thursday (today): 7 miles @ 8:22 pace
6:12 am start. Heartrate still very high for the pace I was running. The majority of the run was spent wondering if there was something wrong with me. Had 9 miles on schedule but cut it short due to time constraints. Sucks, but may have to use the start of this plan to merely get myself back into 'running shape'.
Goals for half-marathon may have to be scaled back a tad at this rate. We shall see.

great flick!
I hope there is a sequel!
great job getting yourself out there!! i just keep going back and forth (today's post) between morning and evening running. i do love the mornings though :)
i am sure it wont take long to get the heartrate down. those weren't slow runs though!
i'm impressed, Billy! even if it's only happened twice. ;) but, 45 minutes to get ready to go running in the morning? i thought i was slow to get ready. :) have you thought about sleeping in your running clothes?
oh, and lol at the credits. not going to give any special thanks to your Mizunos or Garmin?
Pffftttt you gotta get up at 4:30am, homie! It's the only time to roll! :P Only playin! GREAT JOB!
Did you by chance get some bacon for breakfast while you were out? :P
No wonder you were posting so early on the Daily over at RWOL! Good stuff, man.
hahaha. great video. love the 20 secs of credits at the end. big head anyone? hmmm? you must've been ready to go if you spent all the extra time documenting your morning. and if it was me, i would've only gotten up at 5:12 if i was going out to run at 5:15 or 5:20, not 6:01. great job on the am workouts... i need to get back on this myself... thanks for the guilt trip :)
Ok, didn't want to get into the specifics, but a couple of comments in here left me with no choice.
So...some clarificaton: the cup of coffee I have in the morning helps 'facilitate' the digestive process. Hence, the lull in 'time I awake' vs. 'time I actually leave my place'. I'll sip my coffee and hop on my computer until...it's time.
@ sara - ahem, that's 3 times actually.
@ marcy - you can never get enough bacon.. ;)
@ lindsay - don't make fun of my big head!
Key Grip? Funny, way too funny!! I wouldnt worry too much about the heart rate issue by the way. Different things cause it to start high. When I dont sleep well the night before or if I ate bad, my heart rate always starts off high and takes a half mile or so to "regulate." Plus, you probably arent used to running mornings. By the way, love the camera. Gotta get one. Ive seen those flat, small ones at Best Buy. is that what you have? (Damn, sorry for wasting all your blog space with these mindless ???s)
@ Kev - yeah, that's the thing. It's been like this for the entirety of my last 3-4 runs. Keep reading HR near/at what they'd be if I was running at LT paces. Can't figure it out. Frustrating.
Anyway, the point-and-shoot I use for all my photography/video is the following: http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-cameras/canon-powershot-sd750-silver/4505-6501_7-32314640.html?tag=mncol;lst
Nothing fancy.
Entertaining video. It certainly does depict the lonely life of a runner. I'm with you on the coffee. If I'm getting up early to run, I have to give myself time to lighten the load, otherwise it's gonna happen on the run!
How cute is your video. Hope we see more. Excellent job getting up and moving.
Your blog makes me laugh (...not at you...of course).
Good job, Burger.
I love morning runs, but it's hard to do when you have longer runs especially since I have to commute to work....nice job on getting up though!!! that seems to be the hardest part :)
Dude - you violated your exclusivity contract with New West Studios. You'll be hearing from my lawyer, Mr Henry Chowmix soon. Remember when we agreed you'd never key grip a non NWS production? And wtf is ABWTS or whatever? Hahah
Love it dude. I could never do that... CRAZY
Okay, first of all...yay for early mornings! You know well that I'm an ass-crack-of-the-morning kinda girl so I am happy at the news of another potential convert. It's gonna hurt for a while but you'll get used to it soon enough. :)
And also, nearly fell off my chair laughing when "A BTTW production" scrolled past!
It's hard to get up but once I'm up I'm good to go!
What I can't do is get up and read/browse the internet and then run. I have to get up lace up the shoes grab a couple of coffee swigs and get out the door before I convince myself to go back to bed!
Nice video! I don't think I have skillz to run and take pics =).
I LOVE early morning runs because you are usually the only one out there!!! And that is such a peaceful serene feeling!!
Nice video...no credit for a DP or Camera Asst??
Good luck with the early morning workouts.
When I was an employed Green Girl, I sometimes went into work at 05:00. I worked across the street from Bally's and I'd see all the people lined up to go inside. I guess if you're lined up waiting for the gym to open, you are pretty hardcore.
Doesn't it take about 6 weeks of doing something for it to become habit? That's a whole heap of early mornings.. Good luck and let us know how it goes.
