I have been a part of the Big Brother/Big Sister program for almost 2 years now. I've been mentoring a terrific 7-year old boy from Watts during that time and it's been a tremendous experience for the both of us. One area I like to stress the importance of is physical activity. We play basketball and football whenever we get have a chance...but there are times when I just really would prefer to run but schedule won't allow it. So instead of choosing between hanging out with him and running, I'll combine both. Sometimes you just have to get creative in how you get them in.
What I'll do is when it comes time to pick him up, I'll be sure he brings his bike along. We've usually just confined ourselves to the bike path on the beach, but I really wanted to run last night so we did this around my neighborhood in West LA this time around. With him on his little bike and me in running gear and a hydration pack strapped to my back, we set off on our little adventure.
We probably covered anywhere from 4-5 miles and had a blast doing it. We ran/biked over to the nearby Santa Monica airport where there's also a dog park, so we saw some planes take off and played with some dogs. It was a good workout for sure because there are some hills in the neighboring neighborhoods when I had to run-push him at times. At various points we made drink stops, ran through parks and just had a grand ol' time.

In other news...just received my Garmin Forerunner 301 in the mail today! Woo hoo!
It may be a slightly antiquated model given the latest technology that's out, but for $130, how can you beat that? Can't wait to try it out in tonight's run..

Just be aware - the 301 is awesome, but the HR Mon can be flakey at times...
